Influential Ibiza Women (International Women's Day 8th March)

International Women's Day, celebrated globally on March 8th, traces its origins back to the early 20th century, emerging from the labour movements in North America and Europe.

The first IWD was observed in 1911, initiated by Clara Zetkin, a German Marxist and advocate for women's rights, who proposed the idea at the International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen. It was marked by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, demanding women's rights to work, vote, be trained, hold public office, and end discrimination.

It’s now evolved into a global day of recognition and celebration, highlighting the achievements of women, advocating for gender equality, and raising awareness about women's issues worldwide.

In celebration of IWD, I’d love to share with you some incredible women who live, work and shape Ibiza.

Virginia Vald
Fashion

Virginia stands out to me to highlight for International Women's Day, not only for her innovative bridal and haute couture designs that blend Ibiza’s hippie-chic style with contemporary fashion but also for her embodiment of female entrepreneurship and empowerment.

I love the fact that she is committed to local production, with 80% of her collections made in Ibiza because it really shows her dedication to "Made in Spain" quality and supporting Ibicencan artisans.

Her showroom in Ibiza is amazing as well! Virginia’s success story is a testament to the impact women can have in the fashion industry and beyond, making her an excellent role model for aspiring female designers and entrepreneurs worldwide.

Dawn Hindle
Nightlife

Dawn is Ibiza's nightlife queen, who shook up the scene with Manumission and Ibiza Rocks before breathing new life into one of my favourite spots, Pikes Hotel, turning it into a hotspot for the creative and the famous.

She turned clubbing on its head with bold, unexpected shows at the biggest night club in the world, then led the charge into live music, bringing rock 'n' roll to the dance music island. At Pikes, she kept the wild spirit alive while adding her own unique twist, making it a cultural hub with unique festivals, comedy, club nights and one of the best Sunday Roasts on the island!

Her story is all about daring to be different and making Ibiza the place for unforgettable nights. What a woman!

Nues Costa
Agriculture

Neus Costa took over Can Soldat, a family-run farm in Ibiza, after her father retired. She faced a significant decision: to continue the farming tradition her parents had established or go down a different path.

Choosing to maintain the farm, Neus swapped a potential banking career for agriculture, embracing the challenges and rewards of farm life. Her dedication highlights a commitment to sustaining her family's legacy and the agricultural traditions of Ibiza.

Miranda Makaroff
Art

Miranda’s art exemplifies the spirit of International Women's Day through her celebration of female pleasures, desires, and freedoms. Her work is a vivid, censorship-free offering that champions women's empowerment and self-discovery.

Showcased globally, including at the Miami Art Basel and galleries in Madrid and Ibiza, Makaroff's art encourages viewers to explore their depths, advocating for a society that values inclusivity, diversity, and the breaking of conventional norms.

If you haven’t experienced any of her work yet, head to El Silencio, you won’t be disappointed!

Susie Pearl
Wellness

Susie is one of those women that is involved in various creative and wellness activities in Ibiza. She is known as an author, writer, coach, and podcaster, focusing on themes such as creativity, wellness, positive mental health, and conscious living.

She has such a significant presence in Ibiza, contributing to its cultural and wellness community through her work and experiences, including overcoming brain cancer and telling her incredible story across multiple mediums. Her contributions to TEDx events in Ibiza highlight her commitment to sharing her insights and experiences with a wider audience.

All of these women shine bright on the White Isle and I would love to hear from you if there is anyone that stands out to you as well!
